Street Light Control System
Introduction
A street light control system is an automated system that controls street lights according to conditions such as the amount of light in the environment and a preset time. It can also provide manual control when required.
The system in this example uses a manual switch, timer, light sensor (LDR), and logic gates to decide whether the street light should be ON or OFF.
What Is a Street Light Control System?
A street light control system automatically turns street lights ON when the required conditions are satisfied and turns them OFF when they are not.
The system can help:
- Reduce unnecessary electricity consumption.
- Turn lights ON automatically when needed.
- Control lights according to a specific time.
- Provide manual control when necessary.
- Operate automatically based on sensor conditions.
Key Idea: The output of the system is determined by the input conditions from the manual switch, timer, and light sensor.
Components of the System
Manual Switch
The manual switch allows a user to turn the street light ON manually.
The input can be represented as:
- M = 1 โ Manual switch is ON.
- M = 0 โ Manual switch is OFF.
When the manual switch is ON, the street light can be turned ON regardless of the timer and light sensor conditions.
Timer
The timer allows the street light to operate only during a specified time period.
For example, the system can be configured to allow the light to operate during night-time hours.
- T = 1 โ Timer is active.
- T = 0 โ Timer is inactive.
Light Sensor (LDR)
A light-dependent resistor (LDR) is used as a light sensor to detect the amount of light in the environment.
In this system:
- L = 1 โ It is dark.
- L = 0 โ It is bright.
The sensor provides an input that helps the system determine whether the street light is required.
Street Light
The street light is the output device of the system.
- Q = 1 โ Street light is ON.
- Q = 0 โ Street light is OFF.
How the System Works
The three main inputs are:
- M โ Manual switch
- T โ Timer
- L โ Light sensor
The timer and light sensor are first combined using an AND gate.
The result is then combined with the manual switch using an OR gate.
