Operating Systems and Examples

An operating system (OS) is system software that manages a computer's hardware, provides a platform for application software, and gives users an interface to interact with the computer. Different operating systems are designed for different devices and needs, but they share these basic responsibilities.

This note introduces five examples: Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, Ubuntu, Android, and Hanthana Linux. It explains their main characteristics, typical uses, and example versions.

What Is an Operating System?

An operating system manages the computer's hardware and provides common services that application programs need. It also allows users to interact with the device through a graphical or command-line interface.

For example, when a user opens a web browser, the operating system helps the application use memory, processor time, storage, display, and network resources.

Common operating-system responsibilities include:

  • Managing hardware and system resources.
  • Providing a user interface.
  • Supporting the execution of application software.
  • Organizing files and storage.
  • Providing security and user-access controls.

1. Microsoft Windows

Microsoft Windows is an operating system developed by Microsoft. It is widely used on personal computers and laptops and is known for its graphical user interface (GUI).

Main characteristics

  • User-friendly graphical interface: Users can work with windows, icons, menus, and a pointer.
  • Broad software support: Many productivity, educational, creative, and entertainment applications are available for Windows.
  • Hardware compatibility: Windows supports a wide range of personal-computer hardware and peripherals, although compatibility can depend on drivers and device models.
  • Different editions and versions: Windows has been released in multiple versions for different generations of computers.

Example versions

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11
Example: Using Windows at school or work

A student might use a Windows laptop to prepare assignments, browse the internet, attend online classes, and use educational software.

2. Apple macOS

macOS is an operating system developed by Apple for Mac computers. It provides a graphical interface and is designed to work with Apple's computer hardware.

Main characteristics

  • Designed for Mac computers: macOS is developed specifically for Apple's Mac hardware.
  • Consistent user interface: Its desktop, menus, windows, and built-in applications provide a consistent way to interact with the computer.
  • Security features: macOS includes security mechanisms intended to help protect the system and user data.
  • Creative and professional use: It is commonly used for tasks such as design, software development, audio production, and video editing.

Example versions

The note lists these macOS releases:

  • macOS Monterey
  • macOS Ventura
  • macOS Sonoma
Example: Creative work on a Mac

A designer may use a Mac running macOS to create graphics, edit video, manage project files, and run creative applications.

3. Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution developed by Canonical. It is free and open-source software and can be used for personal, educational, and professional purposes.

A Linux distribution combines the Linux kernel with system utilities, applications, package-management tools, and other components to form a usable operating system.

Main characteristics

  • Free and open-source: Users can use the software under its applicable open-source licences.
  • Customizable: Users can choose software and adjust many aspects of the system.
  • Broad use: Ubuntu is used on personal computers, in education, and in professional and server environments.
  • Long-term support releases: Some Ubuntu versions are designated as Long Term Support (LTS) releases and receive an extended period of maintenance.

Example versions

The note lists:

  • Ubuntu 20.04 LTS
  • Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
Example: Learning programming with Ubuntu

A student can use Ubuntu to practise programming, use development tools, manage files, and learn command-line operations.

4. Android

Android is an operating system developed by Google and based on the Linux kernel. It is mainly used on smartphones and tablets, although it also appears in other types of devices.

Main characteristics

  • Designed for mobile devices: Its interface supports touch interaction and small screens.
  • Application support: Users can install and run many applications, including applications distributed through Google Play where available.
  • Device variety: Android is used by many device manufacturers, so features and updates can vary by device and manufacturer.
  • Linux-kernel foundation: Android uses the Linux kernel as a core part of its system architecture.

Example versions

The note lists:

  • Android 11
  • Android 12
  • Android 13
  • Android 14
Example: Using Android on a smartphone

A user can use an Android phone to make calls, send messages, browse websites, take photographs, and run learning applications.

5. Hanthana Linux

Hanthana Linux is a Linux distribution developed in Sri Lanka by the Open Source Community Sri Lanka (OSCSL). The note describes it as designed mainly for educational purposes and suitable for schools, students, and general users.

Main characteristics

  • Based on Linux: It belongs to the family of operating systems built around the Linux kernel.
  • Free and open-source software: It provides access to open-source software.
  • Educational use: It is intended to support learning and general computer use.
  • Language support: The note highlights support for Sinhala and Tamil languages.

Example version

  • Hanthana Linux 2.0
Example: Using Hanthana Linux in education

A school or student can use a Linux-based system for basic computer tasks, educational applications, document preparation, and learning about open-source software.

Comparing the Operating Systems

Operating systemDeveloper or organizationTypical devices or use
Microsoft WindowsMicrosoftPersonal computers and laptops
macOSAppleMac computers
UbuntuCanonical and the Ubuntu communityPersonal computers, education, and professional environments
AndroidGoogle and the Android ecosystemMainly smartphones and tablets
Hanthana LinuxOpen Source Community Sri Lanka (OSCSL)Educational and general-purpose computing

Although these operating systems differ in their design, target devices, software ecosystems, and interfaces, they all perform the basic role of managing resources and providing an environment for applications.

Exam-Focused Points

  1. An operating system is system software that manages hardware, provides a user interface, and supports application software.
  2. Remember the examples and their typical platforms: Windows for personal computers, macOS for Mac computers, Android for mobile devices, and Ubuntu and Hanthana Linux as Linux distributions.
  3. Different operating systems may have different features, but they share core functions such as resource management and application support.

Key Idea: Operating systems are designed for different devices and users, but each provides the basic services needed to operate the device and run applications.

Summary

Microsoft Windows, Apple macOS, Ubuntu, Android, and Hanthana Linux are examples of operating systems. Windows is widely used on personal computers, macOS is designed for Mac computers, Ubuntu is a general-purpose Linux distribution, Android is mainly used on mobile devices, and Hanthana Linux is a Sri Lankan distribution with an educational focus. Their features and target devices differ, but all manage system resources and provide a platform for application software.
