Types of Software

Software can be classified into different types based on the purpose it serves. The two main categories are system software and application software. Understanding their differences helps explain how a computer operates and how users perform tasks using computer programs.

1. What Is Software?

Software is a collection of programs, instructions, and related data that tells a computer how to perform tasks. Unlike hardware, software cannot be physically touched.

For example, a keyboard is hardware, while the operating system that manages keyboard input is software.

Software is broadly classified into two main categories:

  • System software โ€“ manages computer hardware and provides a platform for application software.
  • Application software โ€“ enables users to perform specific tasks.

2. System Software

System software is a type of software designed to manage computer hardware, control system resources, and provide an environment in which application software can operate.

It works closely with the hardware and often operates in the background while users perform their tasks.

Main Functions of System Software

  • Hardware management: Coordinates the operation of the CPU, memory, storage devices, and other hardware.
  • Resource management: Allocates system resources to programs when needed.
  • Application support: Provides services that application software uses to perform tasks.
  • Device communication: Helps the operating system communicate with hardware through appropriate device drivers.
  • System maintenance: Utility programs can help protect, maintain, and back up a computer system.

Types and Examples of System Software

Operating Systems

An operating system (OS) manages hardware and software resources and provides an interface through which users and applications interact with the computer.

Examples include:

  • Microsoft Windows
  • Apple macOS
  • Linux distributions such as Ubuntu

Device Drivers

A device driver is software that enables an operating system to communicate with and control a particular hardware device.

For example, a printer driver allows the operating system and applications to send print jobs to a compatible printer.

Utility Programs

Utility software helps maintain, protect, or optimise a computer system.

Examples include:

  • Antivirus software
  • Backup utilities
  • Disk management tools
  • File compression utilities

Utility programs are commonly grouped under system software because they support the operation and maintenance of a computer.

Example: Printing a document

When a user prints a document, the application prepares the document, the operating system manages the print request, and the printer driver helps communicate with the printer. These software components work together to complete the task.

3. Application Software

Application software is software designed to help users perform specific tasks. It operates using the services provided by system software, particularly the operating system.

Application software focuses on the user's requirements rather than directly managing the overall operation of the computer.

Main Functions of Application Software

Application software can help users to:

  • Create and edit documents.
  • Browse websites and access online services.
  • Play audio and video files.
  • Communicate with other people.
  • Perform calculations and manage information.
  • Play games and enjoy digital entertainment.

Examples of Application Software

TypeExamplesPurpose
Word processorsMicrosoft Word, Google DocsCreate and edit text documents
Web browsersGoogle Chrome, Mozilla FirefoxAccess websites and web applications
Media playersVLC Media Player, SpotifyPlay supported media or stream audio
GamesMinecraft, PUBGProvide interactive entertainment

How Application Software Works

Application software generally relies on the operating system to access hardware and system resources.

Example: Creating a document

When a student types an assignment in Microsoft Word, Word processes the user's input and displays the text. The operating system manages keyboard input, memory, display output, and file storage.

4. System Software vs Application Software

Although both are types of software, they have different purposes.

FeatureSystem SoftwareApplication Software
Main purposeManages hardware and system resourcesPerforms specific user tasks
Main focusComputer operationUser requirements
Relationship with hardwareWorks closely with hardwareUsually accesses hardware through the OS and system services
DependencyProvides the environment needed by applicationsUsually depends on system software to operate
ExamplesOperating systems, device drivers, utility programsWord processors, browsers, media players, games

Key Idea: System software manages the computer and provides a platform for applications. Application software uses that platform to help users perform specific tasks.

5. Operating System as System Software

An operating system is one of the most important types of system software. It acts as an intermediary between the user, application programs, and computer hardware.

Main Responsibilities of an Operating System

  • Process management: Coordinates running programs and their use of the CPU.
  • Memory management: Allocates and manages RAM for running programs.
  • File management: Organises files and directories and controls access to stored data.
  • Device management: Coordinates communication with input, output, and storage devices.
  • User interface: Provides a way for users to interact with the computer.
  • Security and access control: Helps protect system resources and restrict unauthorised access.

Examples of Operating Systems

  • Windows: Developed by Microsoft.
  • macOS: Developed by Apple for Mac computers.
  • Linux: An open-source operating system family with distributions such as Ubuntu.

How the Operating System Connects the User and Hardware

When a user opens a program, the operating system helps load it into memory, schedules its execution, and coordinates access to devices and other resources.

Example: Playing a video

A media player is application software. The operating system manages the resources needed to run it, while the CPU processes instructions and the display and audio hardware produce the video and sound.

6. Important Examination Points

  1. System software manages computer hardware and provides services for application software.
  2. Application software is designed to perform specific tasks according to user requirements.
  3. An operating system is system software that manages resources and acts as an intermediary between applications, users, and hardware.

Be able to classify examples correctly. Windows, macOS, Linux, device drivers, and utility programs are examples of system software. Word processors, web browsers, media players, and games are examples of application software.

Summary

Software consists of programs and instructions that enable a computer to perform tasks. System software manages hardware, system resources, and the environment in which programs operate. Application software helps users complete specific activities, such as preparing documents, browsing the internet, and playing media.

The operating system is a central component of system software because it coordinates hardware resources and supports application programs.

Remember: System software helps the computer operate; application software helps the user accomplish a task.
